Young Journalists Invited to Join Investigative Reporting Training Camp in Ankara

April 3, 2024
The Association of Journalists from Türkiye has opened a call for applications for its second Training Camp for Young Journalists, as part of the EU-funded project ‘Strengthening Quality News and Independent Journalism in the Western Balkans and Türkiye II’.

The polarised structure of media ownership and the economic downturn leading to the downsizing of media companies have been negatively affecting the employment and working conditions of journalists, depriving them of opportunities to adapt to developing technology and new practices.

To provide editorial, technical and financial support to young journalists who want to get involved in investigative journalism, the Association of Journalists is organising a training camp as part of the project ‘Strengthening Quality News and Independent Journalism in the Western Balkans and Türkiye II’.

Ten journalists will be selected to participate in the training camp. After the five-day training, the participating journalists will carry out a micro-project consisting of three news stories and will benefit from the support of up to 1,000 euros each to cover the expenses they incur while researching the stories.

The participants at the training camp will benefit from the advice and knowledge of experienced journalists, academics and experts. There will be theoretical training and workshops on data journalism, artificial intelligence and the use of new technologies in journalism.

Applicants to join the training camp should be:

  • Journalists from Türkiye or the Western Balkans
  • Under 35 years old
  • A journalism/communications graduate (priority group) or have worked as a journalist for at least two years (priority group)
  • Be a freelance journalist and/or a journalist working for any organisation

Women applicants will be prioritised.

The language of the training camp will be Turkish. For participants from the Western Balkans, the training will be conducted via Zoom and translation will be available. The training camp will be held between May 27-31, 2024 at the Bizim Çatı Hotel in Gölbaşı, Ankara.

Training camp applications will be open until April 22, 2024. Applicants can register their interest via this link: https://form.jotform.com/240881273156963
