Balkan Investigative Regional Reporting Network BIRN hosted a kick-off meeting for representatives of media organisations and higher education institutions from six Western Balkan countries, Türkiye and Hungary on February 20-23 in Belgrade, Serbia.

Established in 2015, the EU Investigative Journalism Awards in the Western Balkans and Turkey, continues to celebrate and promote the outstanding achievements of investigative journalists as well as the visibility of quality journalism in the Western Balkans and Turkey.

In the last decade, more than 70 female journalists have been killed around the world. In the Western Balkans, female journalists have been targeted because of their work and their physical appearance, marital status or parental connections.

The new deadline for submitting applications for EU Investigative Journalism Award for 2022 for Bosnia and Herzegovina, Kosovo, Montenegro and Serbia is Friday, 13.5.2022, at 23:59.

Investigative stories published from January 1 to December 31, 2021, and related to freedom of expression, rule of law, transparency, abuse of power and fundamental rights, corruption and organised crime are welcome to apply.

Winning stories focused on respirators’ scandal, a vote-selling scam in Brcko and fake charities soliciting money for non-existent humanitarian work.

Stories on air pollution, cronyism in business and manipulation of the COVID death toll received the top prizes at an awards ceremony on November 16.

The European Broadcasting Union (EBU Academy), in cooperation with experienced journalists and editors, is organising a training in investigative journalism and encourages young journalists to apply.
